Startup Items

There are 2 ways to get programs from starting up that you do not need to have starting up. In this article I will go through a breif tutorial on how to rid yourself of these startup programs and hopefully acheive a faster startup time. One method is simple and the other is a little more advanced. If you are not comfortable with editing the Windows registry, please stick with the simple method.

Method 1: MSCONFIG

Go to your start menu, then run. Type msconfig and hit enter. You will get a screen that look s like this:

msconfig.JPG

After you get here, click on the startup tab. Uncheck any unwanted startup items(ex. Nero, Quicktime, ITunes, Real Player, etc.). This will not uninstall the program and it will always be available to you, it just keeps it from starting up when your computer does. If you do not know what the program is when you look at it....LEAVE IT ALONE!

Method 2: Regedit

A more advanced startup option is to use regedit(DO NOT USE IF YOU ARE NOT COMFORTABLE EDITING THE WINDOWS REGISTRY). This method will sometimes catch startup items that msconfig does not pull up. Go to start, run, and type regedit and press enter. A screen that looks like this:

Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and expand, then software, then microsoft, then windows, the current version, the click once on run. From withing here on the right side are the programs that start when Windows does. Select the item(key) you want to delete and delete it. DO NOT DELETE WHAT YOU DON'T KNOW IS UNNEEDED TO START UP! The best way to find out if a program is needed or not is to google it.  Just go to google type in the service/program (e.g. jusched) to find out what it is and what it does.  From that point you should be able to distinguish if it's a necessary program or not.
